The Mers - The Epic Trilogy About Mermaids and Mermen by Ocean

First, there is the Mermaid Blog, the info, tales, musings, and thoughts transmitted to me by an actual Mermaid.

And, My The History of Mermaids and Mermen, really a history of our human ideas, connections, and lore about the Mers and why we're involved with the concept of tailed sea beings. I've already discussed this in the previous posting.

And - on the horizon is my Epic Trilogy, The Mers, a large-scale fantasy work about The Mers - their world, their histories, their ways, their beliefs and mores, their ways of life, and their relationships to each other and to other beings. The first book of the Trilogy is I, Mermaid, and it will emerge in the Autumn of 2010.

Merism, Or Why We Are Fascinated With Mermaids and Mermen - by Ocean

What is it about the tailed fish beings who resemble humans above the waist?
Why are we fascinated with them?
Aside from the curiosity we feel about all suppposed, might-be curiosities in the world, there is our own distant past - when, once upon a time - we were water creatures ourselves.
It's that genetic echo that resonates in our own veins when we see an unexplained ripple in the sea, when we suspend our rationality and read mythologies about the Mers, or when we swim deeply underwater and wish our legs would propel us even farther - and we wonder how it would be to be able to breathe water again...
We're all raised on fairytales. As any psychologist will tell you, we never truly grow up.
We only grow used to "reality" - grow immune to flights of fantasy, and become robotic in our approach to life, all too often.
Many of us who still love fantasy, dreams, myths, and legends - ( as well as history - for I feel that history itself is so wild, so fantastic, that it's as marvelous as any created story ) - even as adults, and who allow ourselves to be lured into other worlds imagine or even dream that we, too, can dive far underwater and can glide along like fish.
Don't most of us dream on occasion of flying ? Well, most also dream of swimming unimpeded by the need for taking air.
Shrinks may call both merely a facet of sexuality - a way the mind substitutes swimming or flying for having sex - but that's far too simplistic.
It's remembrance - a genetic memory of what it was like, once, to fly from tree to tree, when we were light, lithe tree-dwellers, instead of grounded, lumbering primates - and swimmer dreams remind us of when we did actually breathe water for eons of uncharted time.
So, Mers are echoes of our own past - mirrors into a more full understanding of our long links backward, combined with what we are today.
The power and freedom of a sea being, the mystery of someone who is autonomous, self-completed, and does not need words or hierarchies, has no need to worry about self-support, who is wild, unapologetic, and engimatic appeals greatly to humans, with all our constraints and limitations.
Let's continue to dream!

Happy Valentine's Day ! by The Mermaid, with Ocean

Valentine's Day! February 14, 2009
I'm wild about your Valentine's Day idea! We love it! I've shared info about it to many of my fellow Mers, and some of us celebrate it too!
Love in all forms is beautiful, and we especially love to make sure that all the beings we love are happy, so the Mers, as usual, swim around - some of us o n night shifts, and some, o n day duty, to make sure that no o ne is caught in a drift net, or has anything horrible, like a hook from a careless human fisherman, somewhere, or even a piece of plastic around him or her.
This morning, as usual, I found several guys in trouble, and I was able to - with the help of my new boyfriend, free them ! This is love - love, of course, is a meaningless word without action.
We can say we love someone, but unless we care for them - meaning take care of them, be there for them, help them out when needed, and actually add to their happy experience of life - making sure that they can enjoy all the benefits of life that you do - without that, there is no love.
Do you have a pet ? Are you o ne of the lucky o nes who gets to share life with another soul of another specie ? How great ! Do you make sure his or her water bowl is as clean and filled with as clear and clean water as you yourself drink? Right. That's love.
Do you put yourself in his or her place in your mind - thinking about how it is to live their lives ? How it is to want to communicate so badly and not have the same throat or mouth or teeth or skills to just tell you what they would like or what they feel or think or need ? That's love - to "walk in their shoes" (or fins ! or belly ! or shoesless paws !), to "Do unto others" the same as you would want done to you. This is what love is. It's called empathy, sympathy, or compassion, and this is what the word love means.
Naturally, the lovey-dovey kind, the smoochy, romantic kind of love is cool too - or hot, should I say ? In our world, hot is cool, so...unless we're right o n the Equator, well..My beau and I are going to swim to a romantic spot, eat some delicious seaweed together, as the sun sets o n the horizon, then swim out to a quiet lagoon and just, well....you know!
How about you?
If you're young - very young - make a time to spend with someone you love - like your pet - and make sure it's a sweet and special time. Or visit your Grandparents, or a pal, or call them, or do something nice for your parents, maybe. Perhaps you o nly have o ne parent. Would you think about making their Valentine's Day special somehow?
That's love.

Do you often gaze into the sea and wonder who's gazing back at you ?
Many of us fish are in almost every area of the shore, and, aside from the flounders, the extremely tiny fish, the shell people and some of the crabs, you probably will see us - not the Mers, of course, since we only let ourselves be seen on very rare occasions, but we will see you.
It's very easy for us to see through the water, though a little ripply, it's true.
We notice what you do, and who does what, and what types of beings you are.
We classify you, in our own way, although we tend to think of humans as a whole as a parasitic and destructive specie, bent on destruction of every habitat, even of its' own, and of the entire planet, due to a defective genetic structure, primitive cultural myths, and insectile societal structures.
Of course, there are gentle humans, kind ones, compassionate ones, who harm no one.
These, we hope, will become the norm, if we all survive long enough.
Just as you classify and sort different species, and types of each specie, so, too, do we sort humans.
We don't approve of zoos, and frankly, we're not interested in seeing you more than we have to, but just as you might know which breed of snake is venomous, and which, benign, so, too, we learn at an early age which type of human is most to be avoided.
We have much to contend with, these days, with the pollution humans continue to heap on the world, and so much of it drifts into the sea. The Mers all spend our fair share of time cleaning debris out of the sea, and, of course, clearing our fellow sea beings, like dolphins, whales, and sea turtles, from those horrible fishing nets many of your more worthless nations allow.
I'm going now, down to make sure the sea people in my area are OK - I thought I'd felt a sound just now, and I want to make sure that it wasn't of someone who needs help.
I'll transmit more to Ocean later.
